Indonesia’s Authoritarian Return: Prabowo, Militarism, and Civic Space Under Threat
Indonesia stands at a critical crossroads as democracy comes under threat. Since the inauguration of President Prabowo Subianto, the country has seen a disturbing resurgence of militarism, growing military influence over civilian life, sweeping budget cuts to rights-based institutions, and the rushed passage of controversial laws with little public debate. These changes have sparked deep alarm across civil society. Journalists who reported on the amendment to the National Military Law, which causes the increasing power of the military in Indonesian society, received chilling threats, including parcels containing a pig’s head and decapitated rats. NGOs and human rights groups face intensifying intimidation and surveillance. Police and military forces have brutally cracked down on protesters, and military personnel have entered university campuses to shut down student discussions on militarism’s return.Yet despite this wave of repression, Indonesian civil society and the public have shown remarkable resilience. Independent journalists continue to report the truth, students and communities organize spontaneous protests and public dialogues, and NGOs work tirelessly to support those targeted by the crackdown. Their courage sends a powerful message of resistance and hope. This public forum brings together Indonesian NGO leaders, journalists, and activists to share firsthand insights and analyze the shifting political landscape. We will explore what these developments mean for civic space, media freedom, and democracy in Indonesia, and what lessons they hold for the wider region, including Taiwan.Join us for this urgent conversation on authoritarian resurgence, grassroots resistance, and the power of international solidarity in defending freedom and human rights.
