After the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, Myanmar migrants in Taiwan began speaking out for democracy and organizing fundraising efforts for their homeland. Five years on, while much of the world has turned away from Myanmar’s crisis, they continue to believe their country deserves democracy and dignity. Their commitment has deeply moved Taiwanese society and us.

Yet the struggle for dignity in Myanmar did not begin with the coup. For decades, ethnic minorities have fought for their communities’ survival under the legacies of colonialism and Burmese nationalism, enduring systemic oppression and unresolved conflict.

Among them is a young Kachin woman now in Taiwan. Since her student years, she has been engaged in ethnic activism, advocating for the rights of the Kachin people. After the coup, she has continued her work from overseas via organizing Kachin student networks and creating spaces of solidarity within the diaspora.

What sustains her along this path of resistance? How does she see the relationship between ethnic struggle and Myanmar’s broader democratic movement? And how does she carry her commitment to freedom and human rights across borders?

Join us to hear the story of the Kachin woman activist. It’s a story of diaspora, resistance, and an unextinguished light in dark times.

Monthly Series: Multiple Faces of Resistance: Voices of Southeast Asian Female Activists

The world feels like a city besieged by chaos and uncertainty. We have witnessed human rights advocates facing various threats and forms of repression, from surveillance, attacks, and arrests to enforced disappearance and extrajudicial executions. Women activists must also confront gender-based challenges in public engagement, and disproportionate judgment and violence based on sex and gender.

Amid such risks and oppression, what calls them forward? What supports them in continuing their fight?

In this series of talks, we have invited Southeast Asian women human rights activists to share their stories. They come from diverse backgrounds and resist authoritarianism, colonialism, racism, and patriarchy in high-risk environments. Through these talks, we hope to learn from their multiple forms of resistance, and that our inspiration and attention to their struggles may one day be transformed into concrete support for women activists.
